One of my favourite things to do on an afternoon off is develop some of my own 35mm film. It doesn’t happen as often as I would like any more so I tend to have a few to do in bulk, but it’s a satisfying journey when I get to it 🥰 most of my photography is personal these days, I have always struggled to be a “project photographer”, I prefer to photograph day to day. And that’s ok, if that’s you too, remember that William Eggleston does it and if it is valid for him, it’s valid for you.

✨Friday 14th February 12pm-2pm

🔶What will this workshop cover?
In this workshop is split into two distinct stages. Please read below.

🔶Step 1: Preparing the surfaces
You will begin with mixing the cyanotype chemistry and coating surfaces with the ultra-violet sensitive solution. We will coat a mixture of cartirde paper, watercolour paper and fabric.

🔶Step 2: Creating cyanotype prints
You will then move onto the printing stage. Begin by arranging objects onto UV sensitive paper and expose it to sunlight. If the weather is poor, we will be using UV lightboxes in place of the sun.
Once your print is exposed to the UV rays from the sun, you will wash the print in tap water to reveal the striking blue and white silhouette image.
Once you have got to grips with the printing process, you will create some more prints onto fabric. Lastly, you will plan an arrangement and then print it onto a canvas bag.
You will take your prints home on the same day, please bring along an envelope or bag to put your images in. Please note that the bags may still be wet.

12-12:15 Welcome, introduction and demonstrations
12:15-12:45pm Mixing chemistry & Preparing surfaces with the chemistry
12:45-1:45pm Exploring the cyanotype printing process on paper and fabric
1:45-2pm Gathering prints and belongings

🔶Access:
The workspace is on the Ground floor and has wheelchair access. Please do get in touch if you have any other access requirements and we will try our best to accomodate.

❣️There’s something almost mystical about creating a photogram. No camera, just light, shadows, and the alchemy of the darkroom. Watching the image appear on the paper is a reminder that sometimes, the most beautiful things are made in the dark. It’s pure magic! 🖤 it was so much fun doing this workshop at UCA Canterbury on Wednesday. A special thank you to UCA outreach and the team who hosted and funded this workshop. This morning was all about exploring Chemigrams with the students at Spires Academy ~ just love how expressive this process is 🥰

Yesterday I visit @thekingsschoolcanterbury again to guide some GCSE and A level students through the full cyanotype process. Using my cyanotype kits, each student coated cartridge paper and 100% cotton with the cyanotype solution. They then explored printing onto these UV sensitive surfaces using their own digital negatives. I was blown away at their enthusiasm and vigour to learn something new and history. They really made the cyanotype process their own 🤍🩵
On the way home I was so pleased to hear Edwin Collins’ new song on the radio, a true genius ✨

The last three weeks I’ve been visiting @spiresacademy in Canterbury, guiding the art and photography students through the cyanotype printing process and the directions it can go in. Working with their theme “beauty & decay” the students drew onto acetate using Posca marker pens and began to think about composition 💀🌺

So sad to hear about David Lynch, when I was at university I fell into a deep Lynch shaped deep rabbit hole, he was a true free thinker. Last week I had the pleasure of being back at @streetsaheadco where I was back mixing amongst some of Kent’s best freethinkers. Marina from @ekc_canterburycollege created a cyanotype print, while sharing her growing creative portfolio with me. I also met so many members of the public who popped by to create a print, thank you to everyone who came in ✨

Hello sweet friends 🩵 with it being 2025, I felt it was about time I took some fresh photos of my beloved cyanotype kits. I began selling these back in 2020 just as the pandemic hit, and my goodness I am so thankful I took that dive. The sales of these kits make up for a small portion of my yearly income, I’d love to get them into some more stores this year (hit me up if you’d like to take wholesale!) Ok, I’ve reemerged from hiding away. January always hits me quite hard, it’s like a feeling of overwhelm. Too much to plan for, too much to do and yet it’s like my brain just can’t compute 😅 I’ve been doing a handful of workshops behind the scenes, yesterday I was at Ashford Umbrella Centre with @inaspacearts doing cyanotype printing with the group. I have some days at @streetsaheadco planned in for next week (17th & 18th Jan), where I’ll be doing more FREE cyanotype demos. But yes, be kind to me because I’m not my most efficient self in January 🥹

One of the best things I bought last year were little magnetic lights. I’ve put them everywhere at home, in the fridge, the hall ways, they even come in handy when inspecting my freshly developed film. 🩵 if you’ve been meaning to do a 1:1 workshop with me, now is a really good time. Jan- March is usually a quiet season for me, meaning more space for 1:1 sessions in the darkroom. I’m at based at @beachcreativecic in Herne Bay! Get in touch if you are on the fence, ✨

A wonderful day over at @northfleetschoolforgirls yesterday ~ delivering cyanotype workshops as part of their Dream Big event! Northfleet have special days deigned to inspire and empower their students, such a joy to teach them all about Anna Atkins and all her pioneering work with cyanotype printing. Almost 200 years on and here we are, cyanotype printing in schools!

The “Quiet season” I expected, isn’t really all that quiet😅 I really do thrive on being busy so it’s not all too surprising to me that I’ve taken on more projects than I intended to this winter. Really, it’s the creative squirrel in my mind trying to squirrel away finds for the REAL quiet months (Jan & Feb are usually quite barren) ~ honestly, so long as I am keeping myself mentally healthy, I don’t really mind being a busy bee. You can find me over at @streetsaheadco for a few days this winter, making cyanotype kits for my Etsy shop and editing weddings from the summer just passed. This photo is from my trip to Norway in 2023, which in all honesty was a bit of a shit show in many ways but I made the best of it at the time. I’m looking forward to revisiting Oslo in 2025, with my lovely mum, auntie and friends. Remaking some memories together. I hope you are keeping warm and well 🤍

Exploring 35mm camera photography and negative printing was fascinating to me as I loved the creativity of manually producing the outcomes and taking images as we couldn't completely predict the results, it was like a surprise.The detail in the outcomes also made this my favourite technique as it created more atmosphere in the images. I also really enjoyed photogram printing since it was exciting to organise the objects together and to see the surprising detail in each outcome.
