A HUGE congratulations to Hayley & Dan who got married in Jamaica last month. So super lucky enough to have known Hayley via our love of photography, and am even photographing their UK wedding celebrations in July this year. Hayley & Dan took their cyanotype kit, that I gifted to them in the run up to their wedding, to Jamaica to make prints using the amazing sunlight. How amazing are these memories?! As always, a joy to be over at @ekc_ashfordcollege last week. Exploring chemigrams with the art students, the medium itself fitted their theme of “change” so well. Chemigrams by their very nature are unstable, the paper is sensitive to light, chemistry and temperature. Resulting in visual changes to the paper when put under varying conditions. The students used multipurpose cleaner, honey, candle wax and much more to create resists on the paper. They also used darkroom developer and fix to push the process further. How cool are their results?!

Another plea for help! I took some time off during Easter, and now I’m lost in the algorithm 🥹 I hate doing these posts, but each time I do it really does work. 📷The Face Magazine: Culture Shift celebrates iconic fashion images and portraits from The Face, a trail-blazing youth culture and style magazine that has shaped the creative and cultural landscape in Britain and beyond.

From 1980 to 2004, The Face played a vital role in creating contemporary culture.

This exhibition brings together the work of over 80 photographers, including Sheila Rock, Stéphane Sednaoui, Corinne Day, David Sims, Elaine Constantine and Sølve Sundsbø, and features over 200 photographs – a unique opportunity to see many of these images away from the magazine page for the first time.

The Face Magazine: Culture Shift is curated by Sabina Jaskot-Gill, Senior Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, together with Curatorial Consultants Lee Swillingham, former Art Director of The Face from 1992 to 1999, and Norbert Schoerner, a photographer whose work featured in the magazine throughout the nineties and noughties.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same name, with contributions from Ekow Eshun, Sabina Jaskot-Gill, Jamie Morgan, Pete Paphides and Matthew Whitehouse, and interviews between Nick Logan and Lee Swillingham; Neville Brody, Jill Furmanovsky and Sheila Rock; Elaine Constantine, Glen Luchford and Nancy Rohde; and Norbert Schoerner and Stéphane Sednaoui.

I am so lucky that my first full day back at work was Pinhole camera building with Logan & Fintan. On the last day of the Easter break, the boys picked up some amazing new skills, they used a Dremel to drill the access hole for their pinhole cameras, used spray paint to make the coffee tins less reflective, and explored how to measure the coffee tins to find the correct pinhole size. Not only this, but they took photographs too! ✨

Hellooooo! 👋🏻Just a little message to say that I’m taking some time off during the Easter break. I have a few scattered bookings over the next 2 weeks, which will be going ahead as normal, but I won’t be taking on any extra bookings until after Easter. My replies to messages will be slower during the next two weeks. I have my granny visiting soon, and my nephews birthday coming up. The last few weeks have been go go go! I’ve barely had time to reflect and recoup, so here’s a reel of a Chemigram workshop I hosted at @rockpaperscissorsbrand two weeks ago (eep!) it was a super fun and explorative evening 🌸🌼✨ thanks to everyone who came to the session, and to Nova who offered to arrive early to help set up and pack down. People are magic aren’t they!

So, @thedarkroombc turns 10 years old this year (how?!) so I’m naturally feeling reflective of my creative journey and career. It would be so easy for me to act like I knew what I was doing back in 2015. The reality is that I didn’t, I had only just graduated and all I knew was that I was passionate about analogue photography. I stumbled across @beachcreativecic and had tremendous support from the volunteers and directors at @beachcreativecic where the darkroom is situated. And my family who knew I had something big to give. I was working a day job back then too, and picking up the odd wedding photography second shooting job and events photography jobs. It was a grind, truly! All my passions made me the perfect victim to burn out, I was willing to work beyond my means and skill set in the effort to building something. In 2025, I now work with early career artists and teens, to help them get their foot in the door so they don’t have to hustle quite as hard as I did back then.

✨The trick? Add strings to your bow and experience. Experience with a focus on building your confidence first and foremost. Gain experience with trusted people and organisations who don’t have exploitation as their core. Ask yourself, how does this benefit me, and for how long?

✨ when you’re young, you don’t realise your own naivety, until your older. Now don’t get me wrong, stepping outside of your comfort zone is key! But it doesn’t have to be a pathway to burn out, or put you in a pattern of cheap or free labour. I’m proud to say that I offer work experience for young people, with their interests at heart as a rule. What do ✨they✨ want to learn? What do I wish I knew back when I was their age? What will lift them up, and help them see their worth?

✨ so as I look at 17 year old me in these photos, think about her experience at university the years following and the pathway she forged, I wouldn’t change a thing. No pathway is linear, and every naive misjudgement I made helped me see how it should be, and help others now, where I can. Most creative people have an insatiable hunger, knowing where to put it is the learning curve.

Happy International Women��’s day! Today feels like the first proper day of spring! I couldn’t resist trying some of @belladonna.uk acrylic offcuts on cyanotype today at @streetsaheadco ~ so coooool!

It was an absolute joy to be back at @pilgrimshospices Margate this afternoon. Pilgrims is a charity close to my heart and a charity I support whenever I can. This workshop was a donation towards their Thursday craft group, a vital group for support, connection and creativity. Their wonderful community space has had a revamp since my last visit, and their garden was glowing in the spring time sunlight. Art + sunshine + friends, a great recipe to boost your spirits 🍀🌞

Thank you to Jane for welcoming me back and coordinating, and to @meerapalia_art for supporting the session. And a big thank you to @lorahelenphoto for taking some lovely photos to feature in the pilgrims marketing. Amazing team work for such a wonderful charity.

I’m back! I had a busy 4 days in Oslo, with lots of cold dips, saunas and delicious food! I also jumped off a 5m sauna roof into the 4 degree fjord, it was terrifying and exhilarating!

On Valentine’s Day I ran a wonderful cyanotype workshop at @streetsaheadco in Canterbury. We explored 4 parts of the cyanotype printing process
-mixing the chemistry
-preparing paper and fabric with the UV sensitive chemistry
-exposing the surfaces to UV light
-washing the prints in water to fix the images

The visitors did really well and we got SO much done in those 2 hours ~ as it was so popular I’m going to schedule another date at @streetsaheadco , will you be there?

Print from 35mm negatives in the darkroom with me (x10 speed!) I spent some time in @unicreativearts Canterbury darkroom yesterday, during one of their applicant days. The aim was to showcase the wonderful photography spaces carefully looked after and run by technician and artist @katie.jolin ~ I focused on getting some 8x10 inch black and white prints of Oslo, on preparation of my revisit to Norway next week 🩵 if you’re interested in learning how to print your own photos in the darkroom, you can visit me in Herne Bay for a 1:1 or 1:2 session. Join Emily at Rock Paper Scissors in Canterbury, for an evening exploring the alternative photography printing process, chemigrams

What will this workshop cover?
In this workshop you will use photographic paper and various substances to create chemigrams.

What is a chemigram?
To create a chemigram, everyday chemicals and substances are creatively coated onto photosensitive paper under daylight or incandescent lighting. The chemicals & substances applied to the paper will begin to react with the paper & act as a resist when dipped in the darkroom chemicals. The paper is then dipped into the developer and fixative in any order to create a variety of results. The developer will encourage areas to turn black, while the fixative will encourage a lighter colour palette.

Who is running this workshop?
This working is being hosted by Emily Rose Parris. Emily is a photographer and arts educator based in Kent. Emily runs The Darkroom at Beach Creative and runs photography focused workshops at her studio, in the community and within schools.
Emily has cyanotype kits for sale at Rock Paper Scissors and at Streets Ahead.

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at beginners up, no previous experience is needed. This workshop is open to people of all ages, if you choose to bring a child they must be supervised throughout the session, please purchase a ticket for your child and for the adult accompanying them. This is due to room capacity and ensuring I can cover the fees needed for this workshop to go ahead.

One of my favourite things to do on an afternoon off is develop some of my own 35mm film. It doesn’t happen as often as I would like any more so I tend to have a few to do in bulk, but it’s a satisfying journey when I get to it 🥰 most of my photography is personal these days, I have always struggled to be a “project photographer”, I prefer to photograph day to day. And that’s ok, if that’s you too, remember that William Eggleston does it and if it is valid for him, it’s valid for you.

🔶What will this workshop cover?
In this workshop is split into two distinct stages. Please read below.

🔶Step 1: Preparing the surfaces
You will begin with mixing the cyanotype chemistry and coating surfaces with the ultra-violet sensitive solution. We will coat a mixture of cartirde paper, watercolour paper and fabric.

🔶Step 2: Creating cyanotype prints
You will then move onto the printing stage. Begin by arranging objects onto UV sensitive paper and expose it to sunlight. If the weather is poor, we will be using UV lightboxes in place of the sun.
Once your print is exposed to the UV rays from the sun, you will wash the print in tap water to reveal the striking blue and white silhouette image.
Once you have got to grips with the printing process, you will create some more prints onto fabric. Lastly, you will plan an arrangement and then print it onto a canvas bag.
You will take your prints home on the same day, please bring along an envelope or bag to put your images in. Please note that the bags may still be wet.

❣️There’s something almost mystical about creating a photogram. No camera, just light, shadows, and the alchemy of the darkroom. Watching the image appear on the paper is a reminder that sometimes, the most beautiful things are made in the dark. Yesterday I visit @thekingsschoolcanterbury again to guide some GCSE and A level students through the full cyanotype process. Using my cyanotype kits, each student coated cartridge paper and 100% cotton with the cyanotype solution. They then explored printing onto these UV sensitive surfaces using their own digital negatives. I was blown away at their enthusiasm and vigour to learn something new and history. They really made the cyanotype process their own 🤍🩵
On the way home I was so pleased to hear Edwin Collins’ new song on the radio, a true genius ✨

The last three weeks I’ve been visiting @spiresacademy in Canterbury, guiding the art and photography students through the cyanotype printing process and the directions it can go in. Working with their theme “beauty & decay” the students drew onto acetate using Posca marker pens and began to think about composition 💀🌺

So sad to hear about David Lynch, when I was at university I fell into a deep Lynch shaped deep rabbit hole, he was a true free thinker. Last week I had the pleasure of being back at @streetsaheadco where I was back mixing amongst some of Kent’s best freethinkers. Marina from @ekc_canterburycollege created a cyanotype print, while sharing her growing creative portfolio with me. I also met so many members of the public who popped by to create a print, thank you to everyone who came in ✨

Hello sweet friends 🩵 with it being 2025, I felt it was about time I took some fresh photos of my beloved cyanotype kits. I began selling these back in 2020 just as the pandemic hit, and my goodness I am so thankful I took that dive. Ok, I’ve reemerged from hiding away. January always hits me quite hard, it’s like a feeling of overwhelm. Too much to plan for, too much to do and yet it’s like my brain just can’t compute 😅 I’ve been doing a handful of workshops behind the scenes, yesterday I was at Ashford Umbrella Centre with @inaspacearts doing cyanotype printing with the group. I have some days at @streetsaheadco planned in for next week (17th & 18th Jan), where I’ll be doing more FREE cyanotype demos. But yes, be kind to me because I’m not my most efficient self in January 🥹

One of the best things I bought last year were little magnetic lights. I’ve put them everywhere at home, in the fridge, the hall ways, they even come in handy when inspecting my freshly developed film. 🩵 if you’ve been meaning to do a 1:1 workshop with me, now is a really good time. A wonderful day over at @northfleetschoolforgirls yesterday ~ delivering cyanotype workshops as part of their Dream Big event! Northfleet have special days deigned to inspire and empower their students, such a joy to teach them all about Anna Atkins and all her pioneering work with cyanotype printing. Almost 200 years on and here we are, cyanotype printing in schools!

The “Quiet season” I expected, isn’t really all that quiet😅 I really do thrive on being busy so it’s not all too surprising to me that I’ve taken on more projects than I intended to this winter. Really, it’s the creative squirrel in my mind trying to squirrel away finds for the REAL quiet months (Jan & Feb are usually quite barren) ~ honestly, so long as I am keeping myself mentally healthy, I don’t really mind being a busy bee. You can find me over at @streetsaheadco for a few days this winter, making cyanotype kits for my Etsy shop and editing weddings from the summer just passed. This photo is from my trip to Norway in 2023, which in all honesty was a bit of a shit show in many ways but I made the best of it at the time. I’m looking forward to revisiting Oslo in 2025, with my lovely mum, auntie and friends. Remaking some memories together. I hope you are keeping warm and well 🤍

Exploring 35mm camera photography and negative printing was fascinating to me as I loved the creativity of manually producing the outcomes and taking images as we couldn't completely predict the results, it was like a surprise.The detail in the outcomes also made this my favourite technique as it created more atmosphere in the images. I also really enjoyed photogram printing since it was exciting to organise the objects together and to see the surprising detail in each outcome.
